Great question! Let me tell you how they came to be.
For years I ran a children’s ministry at a lovely church filled with lovely people and adorable children. Things were great.
A month had 5 Sundays. Then things went quite the opposite direction. For whatever reason those days were tough to schedule. And the funny thing is that since I have been traveling and working with hundreds of churches across the country, I have found others complained of the same trouble.
But back then, I sat before God and waited for an answer. Then it hit me! Plan a party!
That sounds like extra work, you say. And it was. But it was a BLAST! I convinced a few of my most loyal workers to help me out with the first one. We called it a 5th Sunday Party! (Original, I know.) We decorated, we planned, I wrote lessons and skits and made up games.
Oh my goodness, it was a H.I.T! The kids had an amazing time. The parents got rave reviews. And a new permanent fixture to our annual event schedule was born.
For your information, there are 4 months in every year that have 5 Sundays. Every year. So, I began the program.
I asked my entire volunteer team to join me for one of the 5th Sunday parties each year. Just one. Most of them agreed to do so.
Each one was a huge success. We advertised for a month prior and gave prizes if the kids brought visitors. The parents got on board because of the impact and brought neighborhood kids by the carload. Many families checked the schedule before planning a vacation so they did not miss a 5th Sunday Event.
Years went by and the love of these events never diminished. I began producing them because I learned many people struggle with all the planning, where it seems to be fuel for me. And, VOILA! The Party Plans were born.
